this is for wood experts:
I just noticed warmoth offered options of laminated/carved top body. including mahogany, alder, maple, korina and swamp ash ...
what are good combinations besides maple on mahogany?
specifically, how do I have the high end of swamp ash with more low end?
swamp ash on alder or mahogany, for example?
Unless it’s a carved top, the laminated bodies are a 1/8” top laminated onto a different wood. Because the top is thin, most of the guitar’s tone comes from the dominant wood. While a maple cap on mahogany might brighten up the tone a little bit, the tone is still predominantly a result of the mahogany body. Most often, laminate bodies are chosen to showcase a nice top without building the entire guitar out of that particular wood.
Carved top bodies start with a ¼” top and might retain a little more of the cap’s tone, but most of the tone is still derived from the base wood.
