i know that the sm57 is like the standard for recording guitar (miced from amp), but what are some other alternatives for around the same price range? also, what is a dynamic mic?
Audix I5 is comparable to the 57. A dynamic mic doesn't require phantom power as opposed to a condeser that does, just like a passive pickup doesn't require a battery. Dynamics use a magnet to pickup up the sound waves. A wire is present in the magnetic field, when that moves it produces small voltages which in turn translates to sound waves.
You might want to check out the Sennheiser E609 mic. It's around the same price range as the SM57, different style though. It has a flat side that you aim towards the speaker.

No, I haven't used one myself. From what I've heard, they work great though. Some guys like them for live use because they're easy to hang over the front of a speaker cab and dangle in front of the speaker
The 609 silvers are pretty good, smoother amp; fuller then an SM57 which always sound 'peaky' to me. But really...any mic can be good for recording guitar amps. The bigger varible is placement, a $3K mic in a bad spot will sound worse then a $100 mic in a great spot.
BTW...this is a great book for the basics of recording; from : localhost/I know who went to college for quot;productionquot; were handed that book and it's pretty comprehensive. I found it on my own and saved a few thousand bucks! It'll tell you everything you ever wanted to know and even some stuff that you didn't.

I love my 57's but have been playing around with Marshall microphones as well. A lot of bang for the buck!
